Introduction:
“Mine house is a house of order” (D&C 132:8).
In the days of Adam and Eve, education was profoundly family-centered, and followed a patriarchal order that reflected divine wisdom and the celestial nature of learning. In this early period, the family unit was not just a social structure, but the central institution of education.
The father, who according to prophets, stood as the patriarch, typically served as the primary teacher and guide for his children, passing down knowledge, values, and principles directly from the source of divine revelation. The church was based upon the family unit – so therefore, education was based upon the family unit. Education was rooted in spiritual teachings, practical life skills, and moral integrity. Fathers were expected to instruct their children in the ways of God, teaching them about creation, the laws of nature, and the divine order. This celestial form of education emphasized personal virtue, the cultivation of righteousness, and the transmission of wisdom from one generation to the next.
Under this patriarchal system, knowledge was not merely academic or theoretical, but practical and transformative. It sought to shape the character of the individual, preparing them for both earthly life and their eternal journey. Fathers not only educated their children in the spiritual realm, but also modeled leadership and responsibility, showing by example how to live in harmony with divine principles. This educational model, centered on family and patriarchal authority, was designed to create a strong foundation for both individuals and society.
This course will attempt to show what a celestial education is. Many families are in search of answers for their dying families, not seeing that perhaps the form of education we are using could be wrong. There are lots of educational models we can choose from or create. However, many of us are trying to get our families back to the messenger, Revealer of Christ and what Joseph taught, so to do that, we need to see what “education” is to God, not what man defined it as. This is why we call it a “Joseph Smith Education.”
There are 10 principles the prophet taught throughout his writings, that show what a celestial education or lifestyle should look like when within the family. We will focus on those principles using film, along with inspired teachings of prophets to support. The celestial nature of this education lay in its alignment with the divine order, where wisdom flowed from the patriarch as a conduit of divine revelation, establishing a pattern for future generations to follow.
